We probably have heard about this book in every topper’s interview , the reason behind its popularity is this book helped out many students in their preparations in the field of  past  events and related things.

India’s Ancient Past by R.S.Sharma

For the ancient india , read the RS sharma old NCERT because of main and foremost reason of this book is every incidents that has happened in the past has been described order wise in this book.

A Brief History Of Modern India by Rajiv Ahir

This is the one of the shortest books ever written upon history of modern india.

The best way to take out of this book  is to read it like a story and then memorizing it in mind for a while then go through that particular chapter again.

after following the above steps , just attempt the test of that particular chapter in order to know your command upon that particular topic or chapter. Then go with the ahead of chapters and keep doing like this

As per some toppers suggestion , you can complete this book in 15-20 days if you read it 2-3 hours per day but provided you go with the above steps in order to be fluent with this particular  book fully.
